At Theatre Washington’s 2023 Helen Hayes Awards ceremony on May 22 at The Anthem on the District Wharf in Washington, the Spanish-language GALA Hispanic Theatre received nine awards, including Outstanding Musical – Helen, for On Your Feet! La historia de Emilio y Gloria Estefan ¡En español!, along with one award each for its productions of Revoltosa (The Troublemaker) and La casa de la laguna (The House on the Lagoon). Company members gave tributes to Hugo Medrano, co-founder and producing artistic director, who passed away earlier in the day.

Stages St. Louis’ “In the Heights,” a jubilant celebration of culture, community, and connection, won six awards, including Outstanding Musical Production, Music Director, Choreography, Set Design, Costume Design (tie) and Ensemble in a Musical, at the St. Louis Theater Circle Awards Monday.

Esta producción, a cargo de la Fundación Arturo Somohano con la dirección de Luis Salgado (”In The Heights”), es otra celebración al talento del País, desde la parte técnica hasta la artística. Tratándose de una historia conocida, con una naturaleza musical tan cercana a la nuestra, fue evidente cómo los actores, actrices, bailarines y músicos, lograron hacerla suya (aún siendo mayormente en inglés), al punto de adentrar a la audiencia en cada emoción representada.

El musical “On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan” tiene su historia en los teatros de Estados Unidos, incluido Broadway, donde estrenó en el 2015, pero la puesta en la escena local, con Denise Quiñones y Eddie Noel Rodríguez como protagonistas, debe ser, sin duda, una de las mejores representaciones sobre la vida y obra del famoso binomio.

No hay nada mejor que regresar a tu tierra, demostrar tu talento y triunfar ante tu gente. A partir del próximo 9 de septiembre eso será lo que experimentarán los puertorriqueños Eddie Noel Rodríguez y Luis Salgado cuando estrene en la isla el musical “On Your Feet!”, basado en la vida basado en la vida de los artistas y esposos cubanos Emilio y Gloria Estefan.

Salgado, a member of the original Broadway cast of “In the Heights” and director/choreographer of its 2017 U.S. Spanish premiere, elicits wonderful musical performances from his electrifying cast. 

Gaby Albo and Samuel Garnica are set to star in the national touring production of Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s On Your Feet! Directed and choreographed by Luis Salgado, the tour will visit more than 70 cities with a press premiere to be held at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach on November 15.

In the Heights is one of the best productions ever at Stages St. Louis, if not the best. Every facet of this brilliant staging deserves superlatives. Director-choreographer Luis Salgado draws wonderful performances from the entire cast, capturing the style and spirit of Washington Heights with compelling authenticity. Salgado’s choreography drives the show forward with unflagging energy and sparkle.

 Luis Salgado‘s directorial vision and choreography was a perfect homage to the original Broadway production. The emotional connection his direction brings links the audience to the actors and the stories they are telling.
